Scoiattoli moutain hut hike
Rifugio Scoiattoli moutain hut hike at the 5 Torri
The Scoiattoli mountain hut at the foot of the Cinque Torri not only promises culinary moments of pleasure, but also awaits you with a picturesque view of Cortina and the surrounding dolomites.
Route description Scoiattoli moutain hut
The hike to the Scoiattoli moutain hut starts on Col Gallina car park south of the Falzarego pass.
Following the signpost n. 424, you first walk through a small wooded area, behind which the picturesque flower meadows of the Pian dei Menis, framed by towering dolomites, extend.
At a small wooden bridge, hiking trail no. 440 branches off to the right in the direction of Nuvolau. A little later it enters again a wood through which it leads in a sometimes quite steep, rocky ascent. Some passages are equipped with stepped wooden planks that facilitate the ascent.
At an altitude of about 2,000 meters, you reach the tree line, behind which a surreal-looking desert of stones and boulders stretches out. At the next fork, take hiking trail no. 439. It leads against the breathtaking backdrop of the Tofana de Rozes, the Cinque Torri, the Averau and the other surrounding dolomites to the now nearby Scoiattoli moutain hut.
It is famous for the lovingly prepared, creatively refined delicacies from the Ampezzo cuisine, which can be enjoyed in the bright parlor or on the sun-drenched panoramic terrace. In view of this idyll, it is hard to believe that the area around the Cinque Torri was the scene of a fierce mountain war during the first world war.
The way back from the Scoiattoli moutain hut is the same as the way there.
Hiking tip Cinque Torri
The rocky spires of the Cinque Torri are not only a popular natural climbing area, but can also be circumnavigated. After the italian troops had taken the Cinque Torri in June 1915, they built positions, magazines, trenches and trenches and had telephone and telegraph lines laid. Since from here there was an excellent view of the surrounding mountains occupied by the Austrians, the command center of the Italian artillery was also established here.
The former positions have been reconstructed historically by the open-air museum and can be visited in a short hike. Along the way, information boards provide interesting insights into the former war events.
