Sentiero del Sole Limone hike
Hiking on the west coast of lake Garda on the sunny path Sentiero del Sole
This lake Garda hike takes you from bustling Limone to the well-signposted Sentiero del Sole, which features peaceful trails, scenic vistas and various historical remains.
Route description Sentiero del Sole
The starting point is the center of the bustling town of Limone on the west coast of lake Garda, from where you walk in a northeasterly direction to the romantic old harbor in Via Porto. At the port you aim for the small church "Di San Rocco", near which the via Nova begins. This relatively flat road finally joins via Reamol, where the Sentiero del Sole actually starts.
The gentle, rock-lined promenade path passes picturesque olive groves and lush mediterranean vegetation in the immediate vicinity of the lake.
Soon you reach the Gardesana, which you follow a short distance in a northerly direction. At the end of the sidewalk, cross the road and enter the narrow, gravel path 135, which for the first time winds up more steeply among cypresses, pines and holm oaks.
Always following the signs with the inscription "Sentiero del Sole", the hiker can expect, in addition to numerous view points and resting benches, many other special features: Among them are the remains of those military installations built by the German Wehrmacht in 1943-45, other military relics from both World Wars, an old limekiln and a water collection point from the 17th century.
Near the Gardesana, the Sentiero del Sole finally rejoins the already known path that leads back to Limone.
Things to know on and around the Sentiero del Sole
At the side of the Gardesana road, a plaque commemorates the engineer Giulio Angelini, under whose direction a reforestation project of the western Garda coast was realized between 1932 and 1936: After the Gardesana Occidentale, opened in 1931, had been wrested from the rocks in painstaking and risky work, over 250,000 trees were planted between Riva del Garda and Gargnano, not only for aesthetic purposes, but also to secure the slope and regulate surface water.
On lake Garda, the production of lime once represented an important source of income. In large limekilns, limestone was heated at high temperatures and thus transformed into lime. This was used primarily as a building material and whitewash.
