The Herrengarten

History

Laid out in Renaissance style, the gardens of the Hofburg were created in 1570 as a place of peace and quiet for the members of the local clergy. It is only since 1992 that the place has been open for the public. Before that, the gardens had been restored to match a design dating from 1831. The arcade, the orangery and the summer house however were no longer recreated.

The Herrengarten today

While a flower garden in the past, herbs and vegetables are also planted today. The trees and benches arranged around the restored bronze fountain create an inviting and peaceful green oasis. The marble statue in the alcove portrays Pope Pius VII (1800-1823), who had considerably extended the territory of the diocese.

Interesting detail

The medieval stone walls to the west bear remains of round arches, which used to be part of the former arcade.
