The Croda da Lago moutain hut and lake Federa are a sought-after photo and hiking destination because of their idyllic location in the Ampezzo Dolomites and the picturesque reflection of the mountain scenery in the lake.

Route description Croda da Lago moutain hut

The hike to the Croda da Lago moutain hut begins at the small Ponte de Rucurto car park, which is also a bus stop, located on the Passo Giau road.

First follow path number 437 towards Rif. Croda da Lago/G. Palmieri. The path, which initially is gentle, crosses sparse woods and is filled with the sound of the nearby streams.

Finally, you reach a fork in the road. Here the trail turns into hiking trail no. 434. It winds in numerous serpentines over the now steeper slopes, where colorful mountain flowers such as the mountain avens, the primrose or the rhododendron thrive. On the way, beautiful views of the famous Cinque Torri, the Averau and the Tofana open up.

At about 2,000 meters above sea level, a path branches off on the left side of the trail to the nearby Val Negra panoramic point. It opens a picturesque panoramic view of the impressive rock walls of Sorapis and Cortina d'Ampezzo below. A wooden bench invites you to enjoy this dreamy scenery.

From the viewpoint, the trail, which is now almost flat, continues to lake Federa, about 20 minutes away, nestled in picturesque mountain meadows at the foot of the craggy Croda da Lago, enchanting hikers and photographers alike.

A narrow lake path leads around this shimmering jewel, where the lake and the mountains reflected in it can be seen from ever new perspectives.

And also the physical well-being is taken care of at Lake Federa: On the southern shore of the lake, the friendly innkeepers of the Croda da Lago moutain hut spoil their guests with temptingly fragrant dishes and homemade cakes. Thus, on the cozy panoramic terrace, the culinary delights are combined with a picturesque landscape.

The way back from lake Federa follows the already known path.

If all the car parks for hikers are occupied, the Croda da Lago moutain hut can also be reached from the lower Pezie de Paru car park. The approach from Passo Giau on the alta via no. 1 is also highly recommended.

Interesting facts about the Croda da Lago moutain hut

In honor of the partisan commander Gianni Palmieri, who was awarded the gold medal of merit for his military services, the Croda da Lago moutain hut, built in 1901, was given the addition G. Palmieri after the second  world war.
