Lagazuoi mountain hut hike
Hiking from the Falzarego pass to the Rifugio Lagazuoi mountain hut and to the Lagazuoi summit cross
Several paths lead to the rifugio Lagazuoi mountain hut on the Lagazuoi. The hike proposed here follows the easiest and shortest ascent path from the Falzarego pass.
Directions to the Rifugio Lagazuoi mountain hut and to Lagazuoi
The hike to the Lagazuoi mountain hut starts from the parking lot of the Lagazuoi cable car.
Following path number 402 in the direction of Lagazuoi, the mostly wide gravel path first climbs steadily up the ski slope to the forcella Travenanzes. During the climb, beautiful views of the surrounding dolomites open up.
On the forcella at 2,507 m altitude, hiking trail no. 401 branches off to the left. With the imposing Tofana di Rozes behind you, it first crosses the scree- and gravel-laden slopes in a gentle ascent and then climbs in numerous switchbacks to the rifugio Lagazuoi mountain hut. On the way, you will pass a former officers' barracks and several Kaiserjäger guard posts, which are reminders of the cruel mountain warfare during the first world war.
Finally, at 2,752 meters above sea level, the widely known Lagazuoi mountain hut invites you to stop for a break. In addition to the tasty dishes, it is especially the picturesque view of the dolomites from the panoramic terrace that attracts numerous hikers.
Before the well-deserved stop, however, you should climb up to the nearby summit cross of the Lagazuoi, to which both the wide hiking trail branching off to the left and the trail branching off to the right and leading over the rocks lead in a hike of about ten minutes. Next to the graceful wooden cross, you can overlook almost the entire dolomites from the nearby Conturines peak and the Tofane over the Marmolada to the filigree Val di Funes Geisler peaks.
Way back from Lagazuoi mountain hut
The way back from Lagazuoi is initially the same as on the way there. As a small alternative to the ascent, below the forcella Travenanzes, you can also take the trail that branches off to the right and initially leads close to the rock walls. With a bit of luck, the attentive eye will discover the physoplexis comosa, a protected species that thrives here in July and August, in the barren rock crevices.
Finally, the trail descends in numerous switchbacks to the Falzarego pass.
