Hike on Lagazuoi with cable car

From the Falzarego pass with the Lagazuoi cable car to the Lagazuoi mountain hut and to the summit of Lagazuoi

From the Lagazuoi cable car, a hike of about ten minutes leads to the summit of the once hotly contested small Lagazuoi, where a breathtakingly beautiful view of the dolomites unfolds.

Route description Lagazuoi

The short hike to the Lagazuoi begins at the large car park of the Lagazuoi cable car on the Falzarego pass in Belluno / Veneto, just over the South Tyrolean border.

The cable car takes less than three minutes to climb the 630 meters of altitude to the top of the Lagazuoi mountain hut, the highest mountain hut in Cortina d'Ampezzo: the rifugio Lagazuoi mountain hut. In addition to the tasty dishes, it is especially known for the breathtaking view of the dolomites, which unfolds on the spacious panoramic terrace.

Before enjoying a stop, don't miss the Lagazuoi's summit cross, which can be reached in a hike of about ten minutes on the wide trail branching off to the left or on the trail branching off to the right and leading over the rocks. Next to the simple and at the same time graceful wooden cross, there is an unforgettable view of the surrounding dolomites, of which the Conturines Peak, the Gran Lagazuoi Peaks and the Tofane are particularly striking.

The way back from the Lagazuoi is the same as the way there. If you prefer, you can skip the cable car and walk down to the Falzarego pass.

Lagazuoi history

During the first world war, the area around the Falzarego pass was the scene of a cruel war of position. The front passed right through the Lagazuoi: While the Austro-Hungarian mountain soldiers dominated the upper positions and the ridge, the Italians tried to fight their way up the mountain from below. As a result, running and trenches were dug, shelters and positions for the soldiers were built, supply tunnels were driven into the rocks, and the fixed rope routes (via ferrata), so popular today, were constructed so that the soldiers could reach the positions on the mountain quickly and safely as possible.

Since their advances were ultimately unsuccessful, both sides began digging mine tunnels into the mountain to blow up the enemy positions. In the end, five of these mines were to be blown up, and the bright cones of debris still bear witness to their impact today.

But it was nature that took the greatest toll on the soldiers: avalanches, freezing cold, hunger and falling rocks claimed most of the soldiers' lives. The war in the dolomites ended only when the italian troops were withdrawn to the Isonzo area in November 1917.
