Lago Limo lake hike

On the shores of the cozy lago di Limo lake in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature park it is wonderful to dream. This picturesque karst lake at the foot of Col Becheican be hiked on several trails. The hike described here starts in San Cassiano in Val Badia valley.

Route description lago di Limo lake

This, with about 18 km rather long hike to the lago di Limo lake starts at the spacious car park or at the bus stop at Punt de Sciaré shortly before the ascent to the passo Valparola.

Here you follow the initially easy hiking trail no. 11, which leads eastwards at the Capanna Alpina mountain hut restaurant.

Keeping to trail number 11, you soon reach a wooden bridge, behind which the trail gradually becomes narrower and steeper. Finally, it winds its way up quite steeply through the stone-covered, wooden-planked terrain to the Col de Locia, which offers a great view. Here the efforts of the climb are rewarded with a picturesque view of the Sella group and the snow-covered Marmolada.

Now follows the leisurely part of the hike: partly level, partly in gentle ups and downs, the now wider path winds through flower-filled mountain meadows framed by graceful summits to the rifugio Gran-Fanes mountain hut (Ücia de gran fanes). The constant companion on the way is a cheerful babbling mountain stream.

Behind the rifugio Gran-Fanes mountain hut, the path climbs gently to the shimmering green-yellow lago di Limo lake at the foot of the imposing Col Bechei, whose shores invite you to dream and linger. Alternatively, you can continue hiking to the nearby Fanes mountain hut or to the Lavarella mountain hut and enjoy the delicious, lovingly prepared dishes.

The way back from lago di Limo lake is the same as the way there.

This hike leads through the middle of the Fanes Sennes Braies nature park, which was founded in 1980. This area of more than 250 square kilometers is characterized by rugged, sometimes bizarre peaks, gentle summits and plateaus. In view of its complex geomorphology and the manifold karst phenomena, the Fanes plateau in particular is a true Eldorado for geologists. The lago di Limo lake itself is a karst lake embedded in dolines.

At the lago di Limo lake, a wayside cross commemorates the Tyrolean soldiers who died in the first wold war.
