Panoramic tail in Funes valley

The panoramic trail in val di Funes valley leads in a gentle up and down from San Pietro to Santa Maddalena. Along the path unfold picturesque views of the Geisler peaks, the Santa Maddalena church and the San Giovanni church. These three landmarks of the val di Funes valley are among the most popular photo motifs of the Dolomites.

Route description panoramic trail val di Funes valley

The hike begins in San Pietro, the sunny main village of the val di Funes valley. Below the village church there are some parking possibilities.

From the center of the village you first walk up the asphalt road, from which the Bergbauernweg (mountain farmer's path) branches off to the right a little later. It leads in a pleasant ascent through gently undulating meadows, in which already beautiful views of the tapered val di Funes valley Geisler peaks.

Below the sports field, the panoramic trail to Santa Maddalena branches off to the right. It leads partly level, partly in gentle ups and downs through sparse mixed woods and meadows and opens up breathtaking views of Santa Maddalena, the San Giovanni (St. John) church in Ranui and the Santa Maddalena church with the Geisler peaks towering behind it - no wonder that numerous tourists visit the panoramic path every year to experience and photograph this idyll...

Shortly before Santa Maddalena you reach a fork in the road. If you want, you can walk down to the village, which is about ten minutes away. But we walk on the sunny Sunnseitenweg back to San Pietro, where we finish the hike in one of the village cafes.

Interesting facts about the Santa Maddalena church in val di Funes valley

The Santa Maddalena church is one of the landmarks of the Val di Funes valley, along with the Geisler peaks and the St. John chapel. If you believe the legend, it is said to have been built on the spot where a painting of St. Magdalena was washed up during a storm in the 14th century. In fact, the first church building dates back to the end of the 14th century. From this first church, however, only the steeple is preserved.

Today, the small church with the towering val di Funes valley Geisler peaks behind it is one of the most popular photo motifs in South Tyrol and the Dolomites in particular.
