Cinque Torri Hike

Hike to the Scoiattoli moutain hut and to the Cinque Torri open-air museum in the Dolomites

The hike to the Cinque Torri promises picturesque mountain landscapes, culinary delights at the Scoiattoli moutain hut, and stimulating historical insights: at the Cinque Torri open-air museum, in fact, you can immerse yourself in the harsh everyday life at the front during the first world war.

Description hike Cinque Torri

The hike to the Cinque Torri begins on Col Gallina south of the Falzarego Pass.

Following the signpost n. 424, the hike to the Cinque Torri initially leads through a small wooded area, behind which the idyllic flower meadows of the Pian dei Menis extend.

At the next fork, continue along hiking trail no. 424 towards Bain de Dones. It leads down to the now nearby Cinque Torri chairlift, with which you can easily and comfortably float up to the inviting Scoiattoli moutain hut. But we follow the sometimes quite steep hiking trail that climbs below the chairlift over tree-covered slopes and panoramic meadows to the Scoiattoli mountain hut.

At the foot of the Cinque Torri, this popular Ampezzo moutain hut invites you to take a rest. The Scoiattoli moutain hut is known for its lovingly prepared, creatively refined culinary delights served against the breathtaking backdrop of the soaring Dolomites all around.

The culinary highlight is followed by the historical one: the hike through the Cinque Torri open-air museum, where you can immerse yourself in the mountain warfare of the first world war. The former positions, dugouts, barrel trenches and trenches have been reconstructed true to history and, together with the stimulatingly designed information boards, provide interesting insights into the harsh everyday life of war.

The circuit of the Cinque Torri ends again at the Scoiattoli moutain hut. A little above the Scoiattoli moutain hut, trail no. 440 branches off to the right in the direction of Pian dei Menis. It leads in a pleasant descent through flowery mountain meadows and forest slopes and opens up picturesque views.

In the meadows of Pian dei Menis, the Cinque Torri trail joins the already known trail n. 424, which climbs gently to the starting point on Col Gallina.

The Cinque Torri in the first world war

After having set up an observation post on the 2,649 m high Averau, complete with telephone and electric searchlight, the Italian soldiers occupied the strategically located Cinque Torri at the beginning of June 1915. Subsequently, they built running and trenches, machine-gun and artillery positions, shelters for trailing animals, food and weapons magazines, and had telephone and telegraph lines laid.

Since from the Averau and the Cinque Torri there was an excellent view of the surrounding positions occupied by the Austrian troops on the Sass de Stria or the Valparola Pass, the command headquarters of the Italian mountain artillery was also established here.

A cruel mountain war followed, which the Cinque Torri open-air museum still provides interesting insights into today.
