Hike to Fanes mountain hut from Cortina
From Cortina d' Ampezzo to the Fanes waterfall, to the Limo lake, to the Limo pass and to the Fanes mountain hut
The Fanes mountain hut is one of the most popular alpine cabins in the Val Badia valley dolomites. This route description leads from Cortina d'Ampezzo past the Fanes waterfall, the Limo lake and the Limo pass to this cozy mountain hut.
Route description Fanes mountain hut
The hike to the Fanes mountian hut starts at the car park around the Visitor center (centro visitatori) at the entrance to the Dolomiti d'Ampezzo Nature Park.
Always following path number 10, the initially asphalted path leads along the crystal clear Val di Fanes valley. Along the way, information boards provide information about the lush plant diversity that thrives here. Particularly prominent is the rare lady's slipper orchid, which is a protected species.
Finally, you reach Ponte Alto, where dizzyingly beautiful views open up into the imposing gorges where the Fanes waterfall plunges to the valley. With a height of 90 meters, it is the highest waterfall in the dolomites.
Behind Ponte Alto, the gravel path gradually becomes steeper. It winds in numerous serpentines through the shady coniferous forest.
At an altitude of about 1,800 meters, the forest gradually thins out to reveal the steep rock faces of Col Bechei and the surrounding dolomites. In front of this impressive backdrop, the wide path leads partly level, partly in a rather steep ascent through the idyllic mountain meadows through which the Fanes stream flows.
Finally, at a small wooden bridge, hiking path no. 10A branches off in the direction of Fanes mountian hut. It climbs through the stone-covered, flower-rich mountain meadows and shortly afterwards rejoins the wide hiking trail no. 10. Now the green-yellow shimmering Limo lake is not far away, whose shores invite you to dream and linger.
From the Limo lake, the path winds its way to the highest point of the hike: the cross-decorated Limo pass. Here unfold unforgettably beautiful views of the surrounding dolomites with the Kreuzkofel group (monte Cavallo) or the shimmering Green lake, the small wetland at the foot of the legendary Parliament of the Marmots and the Lavarella and Fanes mountain huts, our hiking destination today.
After the short descent from Limo pass, hikers are welcomed at the cozy Fanes mountian hut. The wide range of traditional, freshly prepared dishes will not only make gourmets' hearts beat faster.
The way back from the Fanes mountain hut is the same as on the way there.
Notes on the Fanes mountian hut hike
As this is a rather long hike of about 23 km, it is recommended to divide the hike into two days and to spend the night in the Fanes mountain hut.
As an alternative to the route suggested here, you can also hike to the Fanes mountain hut from Pederu near San Vigilio in the Val Badia valley.
The wide path to the Fanes mountain hut is also designated as a MTB route.
