Marmitte dei giganti torbole
Easy hike from Torbole to the marmitte dei giganti, the glacier traces from the last ice age
The marmitte dei giganti near Torbole are a special sight on lake Garda. A short hike leads to these gigantic cavities from the last ice age, which can also be undertaken with children.
Route description marmitte dei giganti
The hike to the marmitte dei giganti starts at the car park "Parcheggio Strada Granda" in Torbole. Here you follow the "Strada Granda" for a short distance until the path to the marmitte branches off to the right.
At first it leads almost level past olive trees and vines. Finally, the initially wide path turns into a narrower, stony path that winds leisurely upwards along a small stream.
After about half an hour of gentle hiking, you reach the first of the two marmite, which date back to the last ice age. These are cavities, which were washed out of the soft limestone by the melt water in the period of 70,000 - 10,000 years ago. It is said that Risa once drank from the gigantic "pots", hence the name "marmitte dei giganti".
A ladder cut into the rocks leads to the second, but much smaller "giant pot". The climb is doubly rewarding, especially since at the end of it you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The way back from the marmitte dei giganti is the same as the way there.
Interesting facts about the marmitte dei giganti
In technical jargon, such cavities are also called "marmitte glaciali" (glacial pots): This is because the outflowing meltwater set larger rock debris in circular motion, which subsequently worked their way through the rocks in a spiral pattern. Because of this "mill effect", the hollow forms created in this way are called "glacial mill/glacial pots".
