Medalges montain hut Sobutsch hike

The Medalges mountian hut, the Sobutsch, the rifugio Genova mountain hut and the malga Gamen mountain hut are connected by a beautiful hiking trail over the forcella San Zenone. On the way, breathtaking close-up views of the Geisler peaks and the Dolomites rising all around open up.

Route description Medalges mountain hut Sobutsch

The hike to the Medalges mountain hut and to the Sobutsch starts at the car park Zannes in the Val di Funes valley end, where you have to pay a fee.

At the car park, hiking trail no. 6 points the way to the forcella San Zeno. It first leads past the inviting Zanser Schwaige, behind which it soon enters into the woods.

In front of the backdrop of the graceful Val di Funes Geisler peaks, it climbs along the small San Zeno beck to the Tschantschenon mountain hut, which is used as a youth camp in summer. Behind the mountain hut, the wide path turns into a narrow trail, which winds its way up the initially wooded meadow slopes at the foot of the Val di Funes Geisler peaks to the forcella San Zeno wind gap in what is now a somewhat steeper climb.

On this cross decorated passage into the Val Badia valley opens up a beautiful view of the nearby rock faces of the Puez group and the monte Cavallo peak towering behind it.

From the forcella San Zeno wind gap trail no. 5 leads to the now nearby Medalges mountain hut, where hikers are served traditional South Tyrolean hut dishes, homemade yogurt and cheese throughout the summer.

At the Medalges mountain hut, hiking trail no. 3 branches off to the rifugio Genova mountain hut. It climbs up to the next wind gap, at 2,421 m above sea level, where a panoramic panel provides information about the mountains towering all around.

Those who wish can now immediately descend to the rifugio Genova mountain hut. But first we walk on the left branching, not signposted, but well trodden fell path over the long ridge to the Sobutsch. A little later, on this summit without a cross, a picturesque view opens up to Val di Funes valley and the surrounding mountains with the Sass de Putia dominating everything.

From Sobutsch you walk back on the already known path to the wind gap, from where an initially rocky and gravel-covered path descends over partly steep slopes to the inviting rifugio Genova mountain hut.

From the rifugio Genovam mountain hut, hiking trail no. 35 leads through panoramic mountain meadows down to the popular Gampen mountain hut, from where hiking trail no. 33 leads back to the starting point in Zannes.
