Monte Piano Tourist Trail

Between the Misurina lake and the Landro lake rises the mighty Monte Piana with its historical north peak, the 2,324 m high Monte Piano. While during the first world war a bloody war of position raged up here, Monte Piano is today one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains of the eastern dolomites. At the same time, however, bomb craters, troop bases and trenches remind us of that dark chapter in history.

Several paths lead to Monte Piano. This itinerary follows the tourist trail marked with the number 6A. Those who shy away from rope-secured passages over steep rocky slopes can also hike Monte Piana in an easy hike from lake Antorno.

Route description to Monte Piano

This varied hike starts in the village of Carbonin, south of Lago di Landro lake.

Near the hotel settlement, the tourist trail no. 6A branches off to the left. It leads over the scree of the Popena beck and a little later climbs steadily up the wooded slopes. Already here, individual war relics remind us of the mountain war with its heavy losses.

Behind the timberline, the narrow trail, which in places is nestled close to the steep rock faces, winds its way up to the high plateau of Monte Piana against a breathtaking backdrop. Some passages are secured with wooden steps and holding ropes.

Finally, on the summit plateau, an unforgettable panoramic view opens up: Striking Dolomite mountains such as the world-famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the massive Monte Cristallo or the striking Croda Rossa tower high all around.

At the same time, however, numerous war relics remind us that Monte Piano was once the scene of a cruel mountain war. The historical itinerary provides a brief insight into this dark chapter of history.

The way back from Monte Piano is the same as on the way there. But before that, you can stop at the Bosi moutain hut, about ten minutes to the south.

Monte Piana during the first world war

Since the border between Austria and Italy ran through the middle of Monte Piana, both the Italians and the Austrians wanted to hold this strategically important mountain.

On June 7, 1915, it was taken for the first time by the Habsburg soldiers and immediately fortified despite Italian resistance. Immediately, however, the Italians captured its southern side. What followed was a bloody war of position that lasted a total of two years and did not bring about a decisive turning point.

In total, about 14,000 mountain soldiers lost their lives up here. Some of them found their final resting place in the nearby austro-hungarian cemetery in Val di Landro valley.

Incidentally, the pyramid on Monte Piana commemorates the poet Giosué Carducci, who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1906. During his stay in Cadore in 1892, he had sung about the beauty of the area in the poem "Ode al Cadore". La pyramid was destroyed during the war and rebuilt in 1923.
