Mountain bike MTB tour to Prato Piazza in Braies
Mtb half day tour from Dobbiaco through the Val di Landro valley
This mountain bike tour leads from Dobbiaco to Prato Piazza and via Braies back to Dobbiaco.
Route description MTB Prato Piazza
From Dobbiaco the route follows the railroad line of the abandoned Dolomite railroad, slightly ascending on a wide gravel path through the fairytale Val di Landro valley. Passing the lago di Dobbiaco lake and the soldier cemetery Sorgenti, we can enjoy a view of the world-famous Three Peaks of Lavaredo in good weather after a short while. We still pass the beautiful Landro lake and then stay briefly on the bike path towards Cortina.
As soon as this crosses the road towards Misurina, we take the main road and roll down to the crossroads. At the crossroads we turn left towards Cortina and stay there for about 500 meters. At the first junction we turn right and take the old military road towards Prato Piazza. This 6 km long gravel road from the first world war has a regular gradient of about 8-10% and is still in a very good condition. As soon as we reach the high plateau of Prato Piazza, we enjoy the magnificent panoramic view while having a snack in one of the four moutain huts.
At the northern end of the plateau, at the level of the Prato Piazza mountain inn (Berggasthaus), we turn left across the meadows in an entertaining mix of gravel paths and easy trails to the Stollaalm. Immediately after this we turn left again and descend via a varied, relatively easy trail to Ponticello in the Val di Braies valley. There we stay on the asphalt road for about 1 km before we turn left and take the bike path towards Braies. From Ferrara onwards the cycle path is asphalted and we continue towards the main Val Pusteria valley until we reach the Brunico-Dobbiaco cycle path. On this we then cycle on a slight incline back to our starting point in Dobbiaco.
