From Vallunga valley leads a contemplative and picturesque via Crucis to Daunei and Selva di val Gardena. Along the way, 15 artistically carved stations retell the passion of Christ.
Route description via Crucis Vallunga
The suggested hike along the via Crucis begins at the entrance to the Vallunga valley, which branches off to the left at Selva di val Gardena.
At the paid car park Piano take the flat hiking trail no . 14, from which a little later the Via Crucis branches off in the direction of Daunei. It leads at the foot of the towering Stevia walls in gentle ups and downs through sparse woods and opens up picturesque views of the massive Sella massif, the imposing Sassolungo and the idyllic Dolomite village of Selva di val Gardena.
Along the path you will find 15 artistically carved stations, which have a special meaning: In 1983, after the project had been approved by the parish council and the people of Selva di val Gardena, cut, debarked pine trunks were placed along the path. Subsequently, sculptors from val Gardena valley carved the passion of Jesus in the wood on the spot: the via Crucis Daunei was born.
About halfway along the trail, a small path branches off to the right to the Selva di val Gardena ruins. If you wish, you can make a short detour to the remains of this ancestral castle of the tyrolean noble family Wolkenstein-Trostburg, whose most famous scion was the renowned minnesinger, diplomat and royal advisor Oswald von Wolkenstein, nestled close to the rock walls. The trail leads close to the ruins, to which, however, access is forbidden.
At the last station, which is actually the first, the hiking trail no. 17A branches off to Selva di val Gardena at a beautiful view point. It joins the already known asphalt road that leads back to the Vallunga valley parking lot.
There you can end the hike in the cozy snack kiosk "La Ciajota", which among other things offers homemade cakes.
Notes on the via Crucis Vallunga valley
The actual beginning of the via Crucis is at the view point where hiking trail no. 17A branches off to Selva di val Gardena. The route suggested here therefore leads to the individual stations in reverse order. Those who wish to hike them in chronological order can either hike up from Selva di val Gardena to the aforementioned fork in the road or start the hike at the nearby parking lot in Daunei.
The via Curcis is also a worthwhile hiking destination in winter. When there is a white blanket of snow over val Gardena valley, it invites you to an easy and contemplative winter walk.
