Chiusa Sabiona monastery hike
Hiking from Chiusa to the Monastery of Sabiona and the Gasthaus Huber inn in Pradello
From Chiusa a beautiful hike leads to the monastery of Sabiona and to the "Gasthof Huber" inn in the higher hamlet of Pradello. The cozy
outdoor dining area enjoys great popularity, especially during the Törggele season.
Directions to the Sabiona Monastery Pradello
The hike to the Sabiona monastery and to Pradello starts at the church of St. Andrew in Chiusa (parking spaces can be found next to the fire station and at the northern entrance to the town).
Following the signs in the direction of Sabiona, the hike first leads through the medieval town alley. A little later, the "Sabiona stairway " branches off to the right. It turns into a narrow alley where the hiking sign no. 1 points the way to Pradello - Pardell.
This leads first on stone steps through the narrow alley and then climbs on the paved pilgrimage path surrounded by orchards to the higher situated Sabiona monastery. On the way, beautiful views of the densely packed roofs of the artist town of Chiusa and the surrounding hills open up.
After about half an hour of leisurely hiking, you reach Sabiona, which was the seat of a bishop from the 6th century until around 960 and later an episcopal castle. Information boards provide insights into the long history of the monastery hill, which was settled by neolithic farmers as early as the 4th millennium BC.
In the late 17th century, Benedictine nuns moved into the monastery, where they lived in contemplative enclosure according to the religious rules of St. Benedict of Nursia. However, the last of them will have to leave the monastery in late autumn 2021. While the Sabiona monastery itself may not be entered by visitors, the Chiesa di Alla Croce church and the Chiesa di Nostra Signora church perched on the top of the monastery hill may be visited.
From the monastery of Sabiona, the hike continues to the rural hamlet of Pradello, where the popular "Gasthof Huber" inn invites you to stop for a bite to eat. The idyllically situated inn with its secluded guest garden is known for its regional delicacies, which are prepared from high-quality ingredients. In autumn, hikers also like to stop in for a "Törggelen", to taste the new wine and the accompanying chestnuts, local smoked ham (speck), nuts and homemade doughnuts.
Following the hiking trail no. 1B and 3A one after the other, the hike leads back from Pradello to the Albrecht Dürer town of Chiusa.
